The RAMS are a Masters swim team in the Niagara LMSC of United States Masters Swimming. Our membership options currently offer Rochester area swimmers from two to seven coached workouts per week at three Rochester facilities from September through July. We welcome swimmers ages 18 and over who are interested in fitness as well as Masters competition. Our workouts help improve stroke technique and efficiency as well as endurance and fitness. We currently have 80 swimmers; some are nationally ranked competitive Masters swimmers. All swimmers benefit from the structured workouts and the camaraderie of other swimmers to avoid the tedium of solo lap swimming. The RAMS team hosts an annual Masters meet in November and holds several team get-togethers throughout the year. One week tryouts are available; however, because our membership is near capacity, we give preference to swimmers with some competitive or recent swimming experience and are no longer able to welcome novice swimmers. Use the Join/Contact US link for RAMS membership fee information; we also require a current USMS registration.
George McVey, a long-time member of Rochester Area Masters, is one of the recipients of the 2012 USMS Dorothy Donnelly Service Award. In the early 1970's George started to get involved in competitive swimming because his five daughters had taken up the sport. Never being one to sit in the stands, George immediately became a certified official and started officiating at age group swim meets. In 1975, Tom Ralph (his daughters’ swim coach) encouraged George to attend a masters swim meet hosted by East Coast Masters in Princeton, New Jersey. George was a natural breaststroker and competitive swimming was now in his blood. George then started training in Rochester, NY area pools and spearheaded an organizational meeting of adult swimmers and interested coaches for adult swimmers in 1978. Thanks to George's drive and enthusiasm, Niagara District Masters Swimming was born!
The results for the November 4, 2012 Masters Meet at RIT are attached here. Many thanks to all participants; see you next year.

As Rochester Area Masters (formerly MCC Marauders, formerly Southeast YMCA Masters) begins its 30th Anniversary year under the guidance and expert coaching of Lorie Rick, it seems appropriate to reflect back on how this team got its start. We currently have two of Lorie’s original team members still going strong: Dolly Hinckley and Louise Murray. Sometime in the early months of 1982 Mitch Pierson approached the aquatics director at Southeast Y in Pittsford and suggested they start a Masters Swim group. Lorie was contacted about coaching this new team and she agreed. She was only 21 at the time! Dolly recalls that there were 5 people at that first practice, including her and Louise.
The following swimmers had Top Ten times for scyards in 2010:
Ann Marie (35-39): 400 IM/9
Dana (40-44): 1000 Fr/5, 200 Fly/6, 400 IM/9
Denise E (55-59): 1650 Fr/5
Betty (80-84): 100 Fl/7
Betty (85-89): 200 Fr/4, 100 Ba/5, 50 Fl/2, 200 IM/4
Four RAMS swimmers participated in the XI FINA Masters World Championships at Stanford University from August 4-11. Jim Matysek, Jack van Landingham, Betty Dunn and Neil Brophy all participated in the swimming events at Stanford.
